SPA-H and Corten B are both weathering steels, but each has its own emphasis in railroad hopper car applications. SPA-H complies with the Japanese JIS G3125 standard, with a yield strength of ≥355 MPa and tensile strength of 490–630 MPa. It contains alloying elements such as copper, chromium, nickel, and phosphorus, offering good atmospheric corrosion resistance and formability. Corten B complies with ASTM standards, has higher carbon content, and its corrosion resistance and mechanical properties are superior to Corten A, making it suitable for harsher atmospheric environments.
From the actual requirements of railroad hopper cars, body materials must balance strength, corrosion resistance, and weldability. SPA-H is widely used in Asian railway vehicle applications, with mature chemical composition control and a relatively low yield-to-tensile ratio (about 0.78), making it easy to form and process. In recent years, railroad hopper cars have been developing toward higher strength. For example, 70-ton iron ore hopper cars have adopted high-strength weathering steel with a yield strength of 450 MPa, and Panzhihua Steel has even developed 800 MPa-grade weathering steel P690NQR for exported grain hopper cars.
Therefore, if cost-effectiveness and mature processes are pursued, SPA-H is a reliable choice; if higher strength is needed to reduce dead weight, higher strength grades of weathering steel should be considered, rather than simply choosing between SPA-H and Corten B.
