For exposed automotive parts, SGCD1 is preferred over SGCC because the former is specifically classified as a drawing-quality grade, whereas SGCC is a commercial-quality grade intended only for simple bending and shallow forming. Exposed parts—such as outer body panels, fuel tank shells, and complex inner reinforcements—require severe drawing and stretching during stamping. SGCD1 offers significantly higher elongation (typically 28–34%) compared to SGCC, which allows the steel to flow into complex die contours without fracturing or necking. This superior formability ensures consistent surface quality after stamping, which is essential for painted exterior surfaces where even minor defects are unacceptable.
While both grades offer similar minimum tensile strength and hot-dip zinc corrosion protection, the microstructural cleanliness and grain structure of SGCD1 are controlled to support deep drawing. Using SGCC for a deeply contoured exposed panel would risk tearing and poor shape retention. Consequently, automotive designers specify SGCD1 for parts where the forming severity demands high ductility, reserving SGCC for simpler, non-critical components like brackets or underbody shields where cosmetic perfection and complex shaping are not required.
