Surface preparation is critical: the patina must be completely removed through abrasive blast cleaning to Near-White standards (Sa 2½), creating an angular profile of 1.5-2.5 mils for primer adhesion. Any residual oxidation must be chemically stabilized. A zinc-rich epoxy primer provides galvanic protection and robust adhesion. Intermediate and finish coats, typically polyurethane or fluoropolymer acrylics, offer UV resistance and color retention. Dry film thickness must be strictly controlled per manufacturer specifications. Importantly, painting weathering steel does not extend paint life compared to carbon steel, though the self-healing oxide beneath damaged paint limits under-creep, preventing repainting areas from expanding significantly. For S235J0W specifically, containing phosphorus and copper, special attention to surface cleanliness is required as these elements can interfere with coating adhesion.
