ABS Grade AH36 Steel High-Strength Marine Plate Applications steel plate

ABS Grade AH36 is a high-strength structural steel plate certified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for marine and offshore applications. As a higher-strength grade within the ABS A131 specification, AH36 offers a minimum specified yield strength of 51 ksi (355 MPa) and a tensile strength range of 71,000–90,000 psi (490–620 MPa). This represents a significant improvement over ordinary-strength ABS grades such as Grades A and B, which have yield strengths of only 34,000 psi (235 MPa).

The chemical composition of ABS AH36 is carefully controlled to achieve its mechanical properties. Maximum carbon content is 0.18%, with manganese ranging from 0.90% to 1.60%, silicon from 0.10% to 0.50%, and controlled additions of niobium, vanadium, and titanium for grain refinement and precipitation strengthening. The steel also demonstrates excellent Charpy V-notch impact toughness at 0°C (32°F), with minimum absorbed energy values of 34 J longitudinally and 24 J transversely for thicknesses up to 50 mm.

The primary applications of ABS AH36 lie in shipbuilding and offshore structures. The steel is extensively used for ship hulls, decks, sides, hatch coamings, and longitudinal and transverse frames. It is also employed in mobile offshore drilling units and structural details where resistance to lamellar tearing is required. Beyond hull structures, ABS AH36 finds use in barges, marine equipment, and crane components for bulk carriers operating in low-temperature ocean environments.

One of the key advantages of ABS AH36 is its ability to deliver the same strength as general-strength steel with reduced plate thickness, enabling lighter ship designs and improved fuel efficiency. The steel offers excellent weldability and is suitable for manual arc welding, gas shielded arc welding, and submerged arc welding. Available in thicknesses ranging from 4 mm to 300 mm and widths up to 4,000 mm, ABS AH36 can be supplied in normalized, thermomechanically controlled processed (TMCP), or as-rolled conditions. Its combination of high strength, toughness, and weldability makes it an indispensable material for modern shipbuilding and offshore engineering.
