A few days ago, ArcelorMittal said it was promoting the formation of the first global multi-stakeholder certification standard in the steel industry, Responsible SteelTM. This standard will be formally launched after a rigorous certification process and is expected to take place at the end of 2019.
Responsible SteelTM will establish a complete global certification standard for the entire steel value chain from mining to production to sales. The certification covers the following areas: climate change and greenhouse gas emissions, water resources responsibility and biodiversity, human rights and labour law, community relations and business integrity.
"At present, environmentally responsible production technologies and high ethical business standards are becoming more and more important. They can be passed on to our customers and final consumers layer by layer, so that downstream users of iron and steel products have full confidence in their choices. At the same time, they can also promote the development of the entire industrial chain towards a greener, more intelligent, healthier and harmonious direction." "From this point of view, Responsible SteelTM provides an excellent opportunity for the sustainable development of the steel industry," said Alan Knight, global director of Sustainable Development in AncelorMittal. It is believed that once the standard is issued, it will become a recognized standard in the global steel industry.
At present, Responsible SteelTM is composed of 22 members including steel producers, automobile manufacturers, financing providers, non-governmental organizations, etc. It is expected that the number of members will grow rapidly after the standard is issued.
