Can SUS 410 Be Hardened for Wear-Resistant Valve Applications? steel plate

SUS 410 is a martensitic stainless steel that has earned a firm place in valve manufacturing, particularly where wear resistance matters. Unlike austenitic grades, it can be hardened through heat treatment, transforming its microstructure to achieve high hardness and strength. This makes it suitable for valve stems, seats, and trim components that face constant friction and abrasion.

The hardening process involves austenitizing at elevated temperatures, followed by quenching and tempering. By adjusting tempering temperatures, manufacturers can balance hardness with toughness, tailoring the material to specific service conditions. A typical hardness range of 35–45 HRC provides good wear resistance while retaining enough ductility to avoid brittle failure.

However, SUS 410 has limitations. Its corrosion resistance is modest compared to grades like 304 or 316, so it performs best in mildly corrosive or non-corrosive media. In aggressive environments, it may require coatings or should be replaced by more alloyed materials. Despite this, for many petroleum refining and general industrial valve applications, hardened SUS 410 offers an economical and effective solution, combining adequate corrosion resistance with the wear properties that demanding valve service requires.
