Among duplex stainless steels, S32205 stands out as the most balanced grade, and this reputation stems largely from its carefully controlled chemistry. The specification demands a minimum of 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 0.14% nitrogen—tighter requirements than those of the older S31803 grade.
This composition serves a clear purpose. Chromium and molybdenum provide resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, while nitrogen strengthens the material and accelerates austenite reformation after welding. Together, they raise the Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number to around 35, placing S32205 comfortably above standard austenitic grades in corrosive service.
The balance extends beyond corrosion. The near-equal proportions of ferrite and austenite yield a material with high mechanical strength, good toughness, and resistance to stress corrosion cracking. This phase balance also improves weldability, since the microstructure recovers quickly in the heat-affected zone.
Practical benefits follow from this balance. S32205 is widely used in chemical processing, offshore piping, desalination, and storage tanks—applications that demand strength, corrosion resistance, and fabrication reliability in equal measure. While other duplex grades push individual properties further, S32205 remains the most versatile and predictable choice, which is precisely why it has become the workhorse of the duplex family.
