What Should Engineers Know About SA572 Grade 50 for ASME-Coded Vessels? steel plate

Engineers must recognize a critical compliance issue: ASTM A572 Grade 50 is not listed in ASME Section VIII Division 1, Table UCS-23. Consequently, A572 Gr 50 cannot be used as a pressure-retaining boundary material for ASME-coded pressure vessels unless specifically approved through an ASME Code Case. This is a non-negotiable regulatory constraint that distinguishes A572 Gr 50 from dedicated pressure vessel steels.

The material is an HSLA (high-strength low-alloy) structural steel with a minimum yield strength of 345 MPa (50 ksi) and ultimate tensile strength of 450 MPa (65 ksi). It achieves its strength through microalloying with columbium (niobium) and vanadium, which provide grain refinement and precipitation hardening. However, its primary application lies in structural frameworks—bridges, buildings, and heavy equipment supports where high strength-to-weight ratio is valuable—not in pressure containment.

If an engineer specifies SA572 (rather than A572) Grade 50, this indicates the material is intended for ASME-related applications, typically for non-pressure structural supports attached to an ASME-stamped vessel. For the pressure-retaining boundary itself, ASME SA-516 Grade 70 remains the appropriate choice. A516 Gr 70 is specifically designed for welded pressure vessels requiring good notch toughness at moderate and lower temperatures. While A572 Gr 50 is generally more cost-effective than A516 Gr 70, using it in pressure boundary applications would violate ASME code requirements. Engineers must also be aware that A572 Gr 50 has a maximum mechanical service temperature of approximately 400°C, above which allowable stress diminishes significantly.
