ASTM A283 Grade C remains fully suitable for low-stress structural components. This low-carbon structural steel plate, specified under ASTM A283/A283M, is explicitly intended for low to intermediate tensile strength applications where high strength is not a primary requirement. With a minimum yield strength of 205 MPa (30 ksi) and tensile strength ranging from 380 to 515 MPa (55–75 ksi), it provides adequate capacity for light to moderate load-bearing members.
The material's characteristics align well with the demands of low-stress applications. Its low carbon content (≤0.24%) delivers excellent weldability and formability, allowing fabrication without preheating or special procedures for most thicknesses. This makes A283 Grade C an economical choice for non-critical structural elements where weldability and cost-effectiveness take priority over high strength.
Typical low-stress applications include light building frames, roof decks, stair treads, railings, walkways, and ornamental work. It is also widely used for storage tanks, bins, silos, ductwork, chutes, and equipment housings—provided these do not serve as pressure-retaining components. For non-pressure boundary parts of ASME pressure vessels, such as support skirts, ladders, and platforms, SA283 Grade C is also acceptable.
However, engineers should recognize its limitations. A283 Grade C is not suitable for high-stress or dynamically loaded applications such as primary bridge girders or heavily cyclically loaded members. Its moderate strength and modest toughness mean that designers must carefully verify that service stresses remain within the material's capabilities. When these conditions are met, A283 Grade C continues to serve as a dependable, cost-effective solution for low-stress structural components across construction, industrial fabrication, and general engineering
