S235, S275 and S355 Structural Steels steel plate

S235, S275, S355 Structural Steels are part of the EN 10025 European standard for hot-rolled structural steel, defining various grades based on their minimum yield strength.

Key Characteristics:

S235 Steel:

Yield Strength: 235 MPa

Common Uses: General structural applications where low to moderate strength is required.

S275 Steel:

Yield Strength: 275 MPa

Common Uses: Construction projects requiring higher strength than S235, but still with good formability.

S355 Steel:

Yield Strength: 355 MPa

Common Uses: Suitable for structural components that demand higher strength in construction and engineering projects.

Differences:

Strength Levels:

S235 < S275 < S355: Represents increasing levels of strength as you move from S235 to S355.

Applications:

S235: Basic structural applications where low strength suffices.

S275: Intermediate strength suitable for general engineering and construction projects.

S355: Higher-strength steel used in heavy construction and structural engineering where increased load-bearing capacity is required.

Weldability:

Generally good weldability for all three grades, but welding procedures should consider material thickness and intended application.

Formability:

S235 and S275 offer good formability, while S355 retains formability but with increased strength.

Mechanical Properties:

Tensile Strength:

S235: 360-510 MPa

S275: 370-530 MPa

S355: 470-630 MPa

Elongation:

S235: 26%

S275: 23%

S355: 22%

End-Use Industries:

S235: Buildings, infrastructure, light structures.

S275: Bridges, high-rise buildings, heavy machinery.

S355: Stadiums, bridges, high-load structures like cranes.

Material Composition:

Contains elements like carbon, manganese, silicon, sulfur, phosphorus, and trace amounts of alloying elements depending on the grade for desired properties.

Compliance:

Conforms to the European standard EN 10025 for hot-rolled structural steel products, ensuring quality and performance standards are met.

Understanding the differences between S235, S275, and S355 structural steels helps in selecting the appropriate grade based on specific project requirements, balancing factors like strength, formability, weldability, and intended applications in various construction and engineering projects.
