How Does SS400 Compare to A36 for General Structural Use? steel plate

ASTM A36 and JIS G3101 Ss400 are two of the most widely used carbon structural steels in global construction and fabrication. While they are often considered interchangeable in many applications, understanding their differences is essential for proper material selection in general structural use.

The most fundamental difference lies in their governing standards and defining criteria. A36 is an ASTM standard grade where the number "36" signifies a minimum yield strength of 36 ksi (approximately 250 MPa). SS400, governed by JIS G3101, derives its designation from a minimum tensile strength of 400 MPa. In other words, A36 is defined by its yield strength, whereas SS400 is defined by its tensile strength—a distinction that reflects different standard-setting philosophies.

In terms of mechanical properties, both steels perform very similarly in practice. A36 has a minimum yield strength of 250 MPa for thicknesses up to 200 mm, with tensile strength ranging from 400 to 550 MPa. SS400 offers a yield strength of approximately 245 MPa for thicknesses up to 16 mm, with tensile strength between 400 and 510 MPa. Both grades have almost the same yield strength, making their engineering applicability very similar. However, A36 has a slightly higher upper limit of tensile strength, making it suitable for applications with stricter strength requirements, while SS400 offers slightly higher minimum elongation (≥26% vs. ≥20% for A36), indicating better plasticity and formability.

Chemically, both steels are low-carbon mild steels with comparable compositions. A36 typically has a maximum carbon content of 0.25% and tighter controls on manganese, while SS400 allows up to 0.23% carbon with greater flexibility on other alloying elements. Both have similar limits on phosphorus and sulfur, ensuring adequate weldability.

For general structural applications—including building frameworks, bridges, beams, columns, base plates, and welded fabrications—both A36 and SS400 are fully suitable. They can be supplied in hot-rolled plates, structural sections, hollow sections, and welded pipes. In normal structural projects, both steels behave almost the same when used as H-beams, channels, angles, and plates.

However, there are important considerations. A36 maintains a clearly defined minimum yield strength across thickness ranges, while SS400's yield strength can decrease with increasing thickness, making mill test certificates essential for thicker sections. Additionally, A36 shows more stability in low-temperature impact requirements, whereas SS400 may not perform as well in extremely cold environments. If contract documents explicitly require ASTM A36, SS400 cannot be directly substituted without approval. For global projects, A36 and SS400 are generally interchangeable after confirming mechanical properties meet project requirements.
