BV Grade AH36 is a higher-strength marine steel grade approved by Bureau Veritas (BV), one of the world's leading classification societies for marine and offshore applications. The grade conforms to the Bureau Veritas Rules on Materials and Welding for the Classification of Marine Units, ensuring that products bearing this certification meet the rigorous safety and performance standards required for shipbuilding.
The certification process for BV Grade AH36 involves comprehensive approval procedures conducted by Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore. Products are certified individually or per batch in compliance with applicable requirements defined in Bureau Veritas Rule Note NR320. Steel manufacturers seeking BV certification must demonstrate that their manufacturing facilities and quality procedures meet the society's standards through satisfactory assessments. The certification covers hot-rolled steel plates, sections, and bars in grades AH32, AH36, DH36, and EH36. Certified products must be produced using slabs from BV-approved steelmakers, and periodic audits are required to maintain certification.
From a mechanical perspective, BV Grade AH36 offers a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa and tensile strength in the range of 490–620 MPa. The steel exhibits excellent Charpy V-notch impact toughness, with testing performed at specified temperatures depending on the grade variant. Higher-strength properties are achieved through controlled rolling, normalizing, or thermomechanical processing, with silicon-killed deoxidation practice ensuring clean steel quality.
In shipbuilding applications, BV Grade AH36 is used for hull structures, decks, and other critical load-bearing components where high strength and fracture toughness are essential. The certification provides shipyards and owners with documented assurance that the steel has been manufactured, tested, and approved according to internationally recognized standards. As with other classification society grades, BV AH36 is equivalent to ABS AH36, LR AH36, and DNV NV A36, allowing for interchangeability across different regulatory frameworks. The Bureau Veritas certification thus serves as a vital quality marker, facilitating global trade in marine steels while upholding the highest standards of maritime safety.
