ASTM A516 Grade 60 Plate for Moderate-Temperature Pressure Vessels steel plate

ASTM A516 Grade 60 is a carbon steel plate specification widely recognized for its reliable performance in moderate-temperature pressure vessel applications. As part of the A516 family, which covers pressure vessel plates for service at temperatures down to –50°F (–45°C), Grade 60 occupies a critical niche where moderate strength requirements coincide with the need for good notch toughness and weldability. It is particularly favored in the construction of tanks, separators, and heat exchangers operating below ambient but not cryogenic conditions.

The mechanical properties of A516 Grade 60 are defined by its minimum tensile strength of 60 ksi (415 MPa) and yield strength of 32 ksi (220 MPa). While these values are modest compared to higher-strength grades like Grade 65 or 70, they are intentionally balanced to achieve superior ductility and fracture resistance. The material exhibits a typical elongation of 20–25% in 2 inches, enabling it to accommodate thermal expansion and pressure cycling without cracking. Charpy V-notch impact testing, when specified, is typically performed at –20°F (–29°C) or –40°F (–40°C), with minimum absorbed energy requirements ensuring that the plate resists brittle fracture under transient cooling conditions.

The chemical composition of A516 Grade 60 is tightly controlled, with maximum carbon (0.25–0.30% depending on thickness), manganese (0.60–0.90%), and residual elements such as phosphorus and sulfur held to low levels. This chemistry promotes good fusion characteristics during arc welding and reduces the risk of hydrogen-induced cracking. The plate is produced in normalized or as-rolled conditions; for thicknesses exceeding 1.5 inches or for impact-tested applications, normalization is typically mandatory to refine grain structure and enhance low-temperature toughness.

Applications for A516 Grade 60 abound in petrochemical plants, refineries, and process industries. It is commonly used for moderately pressurized water storage tanks, oil separators, air receivers, and industrial heat exchangers that operate at temperatures up to 650°F (343°C) when design codes allow for de-rating. Its superior forming characteristics make it suitable for dished heads, rolled cylinders, and cone transitions. Designers often select Grade 60 over Grade 70 when forming operations involve severe bending or when lower residual stress levels are desired.

Cost and availability further support the popularity of A516 Grade 60. It is less expensive than many alloy steels and is readily stocked by plate suppliers worldwide. When combined with proper welding procedures and post-weld heat treatment as dictated by ASME Section VIII, A516 Grade 60 delivers a safe, durable, and code-compliant solution for moderate-temperature pressure containment.
