
05CuPCrNi is specified for container corrosion protection because it delivers exceptional atmospheric corrosion resistance at a fraction of the cost of stainless steel. This weathering steel, compliant with Chinese standard TB/T 1979, achieves its protective properties through a carefully engineered alloy system that includes copper (Cu), phosphorus (P), chromium (Cr), and nickel (Ni).
The corrosion protection mechanism is fundamentally different from conventional coatings. When exposed to the atmosphere, 05CuPCrNi develops a dense, adherent oxide layer—approximately 50 to 100 μm thick—that acts as a physical barrier against further corrosion. Copper functions as a cathodic depolarizer while phosphorus serves as an anodic depolarizer, working together to accelerate the formation of stable protective rust. The copper content is typically controlled at 0.25%–0.35%, with phosphorus maintained at 0.07%–0.10% to optimize corrosion resistance.
Containers endure extreme environmental exposure during shipping—salt spray, humidity, temperature fluctuations, and mechanical stress. 05CuPCrNi provides 2 to 8 times the weather resistance of ordinary carbon steel while maintaining excellent weldability and formability for container fabrication. Unlike paint systems that require periodic reapplication, 05CuPCrNi’s self-protecting rust layer regenerates continuously when damaged. This eliminates recurring maintenance costs and extends container service life significantly, making it the material of choice for shipping containers, rail cars, and offshore equipment
