ASTM A537 Class 2 and A516 Grade 70 are both widely used pressure vessel steels, but they differ fundamentally in toughness due to their distinct heat treatments and microstructures. A516 Grade 70 is typically supplied in the normalized condition, which refines the grain structure and provides improved notch toughness for moderate and lower-temperature services. It offers a Charpy V-notch impact energy of 27 J at -46°C, with a yield strength of 260 MPa minimum. This makes A516 Grade 70 a reliable workhorse material for general pressure vessel applications where moderate toughness is sufficient.
A537 Class 2, in contrast, undergoes a quenching and tempering process—heating to high temperature, rapid cooling, and then reheating—which produces a refined microstructure with significantly enhanced strength and notch toughness. Its yield strength is substantially higher at 415 MPa minimum, and its tensile strength ranges from 550 to 690 MPa. More importantly, A537 Class 2 demonstrates superior low-temperature toughness, with Charpy impact requirements typically specified at -60°C achieving 34 J or higher. Supplemental impact testing can require 41 J at -40°C. Upper-shelf Charpy energies for A537 Class 2 can reach 100 J at the nil-ductility transition temperature range.
The toughness advantage of A537 Class 2 stems directly from its quenched and tempered structure, which offers greater resistance to stress and higher toughness, particularly in low-temperature environments where A516 may be prone to brittle fracture. However, this enhanced performance comes with trade-offs: A537 Class 2 requires stricter control of welding heat input and often mandates post-weld heat treatment to restore properties in the heat-affected zone, whereas A516 Grade 70 fabrication is generally more straightforward. For critical low-temperature, high-pressure applications where maximum toughness is essential, A537 Class 2 is the superior choice; for standard moderate-temperature service with good weldability and cost-effectiveness, A516 Grade 70 remains the preferred material.
