SUS 304 (UNS S30400) is an 18% chromium, 8% nickel austenitic stainless steel that combines good general corrosion resistance with high ductility and excellent forming, drawing, and spinning properties. It is widely regarded as the most versatile and most widely used stainless steel grade available.
Its versatility stems from a balanced property profile: good corrosion resistance in atmospheric and many chemical environments, excellent weldability by all standard processes, non-magnetic behavior in the annealed condition, and good oxidation resistance up to approximately 870°C. The 18/8 composition provides sufficient chromium for passive film formation while maintaining a stable austenitic structure at room temperature. SUS 304 is available in virtually every product form—sheet, plate, bar, tube, and wire—and is used in applications ranging from kitchen sinks and food processing equipment to architectural panelling, chemical containers, and cryogenic vessels. Its combination of performance, fabricability, and cost efficiency has made it the default stainless steel for countless industrial and consumer applications.
