Why Is Q235D Preferred Over Q235B for High-Latitude Construction? steel plate

For high-latitude construction projects where winter temperatures frequently drop below -20°C, Q235D is the mandatory choice over Q235B despite their similar room-temperature mechanical properties. Both grades share the same minimum yield strength of 235 MPa for thin sections, but their critical difference lies in Charpy V-notch impact toughness requirements—the fundamental measure of a steel's ability to absorb energy and resist brittle fracture under sudden loading at low temperatures.

Q235B requires impact testing only at 20°C (ambient temperature) with a minimum absorbed energy of 27 J. In contrast, Q235D must demonstrate the same 27 J impact energy at -20°C—a significantly more demanding condition. This distinction is rooted in a strict engineering principle: as temperature decreases, steel becomes increasingly brittle, and failure to account for this can lead to catastrophic structural failure during winter.

Beyond impact toughness, Q235D features tighter impurity control, with maximum phosphorus and sulfur contents of 0.035% each, compared to Q235B's 0.045% limits. Lower phosphorus reduces "cold shortness" (low-temperature brittleness), while lower sulfur minimizes "hot shortness" (welding-related cracking). Additionally, Q235D must be produced as killed steel, ensuring a more uniform internal grain structure. Although Q235D carries a 10–15% cost premium over Q235C, this is a necessary investment for high-latitude bridges, offshore platforms, and transmission towers operating in extreme cold. Selecting Q235B for such environments is not merely a cost-saving measure—it is an unacceptable safety risk.
