Why Is A516 Grade 70 the Go-To Steel for Pressure Vessel Shells? steel plate

ASTM A516 Grade 70 has established itself as the benchmark carbon steel for pressure vessel shells, and for good reason. This fine-grain, silicon-killed steel delivers a minimum tensile strength of 70,000 psi (480–620 MPa) and yield strength of 260 MPa in thinner sections, providing the robust mechanical foundation that pressure containment demands.

What truly sets A516 Grade 70 apart, however, is its exceptional balance of properties. The steel exhibits excellent notch toughness at sub-ambient temperatures—maintaining impact energy of 20J at temperatures as low as -46°C—making it reliable in moderate and lower-temperature service. Its fine-grain structure, promoted by silicon addition during melting, makes the steel easy to cut, form, and weld—critical advantages when fabricating large-diameter shells that must be rolled from flat plates and joined by submerged arc welding.

The grade also offers appealing weldability with appropriate filler metals, and its cost-effectiveness relative to stainless steels makes it economically attractive for large-scale projects. Since replacing earlier grades like A-285C and A-212B in the mid-1960s, A516 Grade 70 has become the steel of choice for carbon steel pressure vessels across the oil, petrochemical, and gas industries—a testament to its enduring combination of strength, toughness, fabricability, and value.
