What Is the Difference Between SA36 and ASTM A36 in Pressure Vessel Design? steel plate

In pressure vessel design, the distinction between ASTM A36 and ASME SA36 is not about material composition—it is about code compliance and legal traceability.

Materials That Are Technically Identical

ASTM A36 and ASME SA36 share virtually identical chemical compositions and mechanical properties. Both are low-carbon structural steels with a minimum yield strength of 36,000 psi (250 MPa) and tensile strength ranging from 58,000–80,000 psi (400–550 MPa). The steel offers excellent weldability and formability, making it suitable for general structural applications.

The Regulatory Distinction

ASTM A36 is a material specification published by ASTM International for general structural use in buildings, bridges, and construction. ASME SA36, by contrast, is the ASME-endorsed version of the same specification, specifically incorporated into the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC).

Pressure Vessel Implications

For pressure vessel design, this distinction is non-negotiable. ASTM A36 cannot be used in ASME-code pressure vessel construction unless it is recertified to SA36. SA36 carries the "S" prefix, signifying compliance with ASME BPVC quality assurance, testing, and traceability requirements. Components in ASME-stamped vessels must use SA36—not standard A36.

Practical Rule

SA36 may always be used in place of A36 for structural work, but A36 may never substitute for SA36 in code-bound pressure vessel applications. For designers, the choice is simple: structural projects use ASTM A36; pressure vessels and boilers require ASME SA36
