Heat exchanger designs in the petrochemical, oil refining, and power generation industries frequently specify ASME SA387 Grade 11 because this chromium-molybdenum alloy steel is engineered specifically for elevated-temperature pressure vessel service. With a nominal composition of 1.25% chromium and 0.50% molybdenum, SA387 Grade 11 delivers enhanced mechanical properties—minimum yield strength of 310 MPa and tensile strength of 515–690 MPa—that ordinary carbon steels cannot maintain at high operating temperatures.
The primary driver for selecting SA387 Grade 11 is its excellent creep resistance. Heat exchangers operate under sustained high temperatures and pressures, often exceeding 450°C, conditions that cause gradual deformation (creep) in lesser materials. The tempered martensite microstructure of SA387 Grade 11 provides outstanding resistance to creep deformation, fatigue strength, and thermal stability, enabling the equipment to withstand repeated thermal cycles and prolonged high-pressure service. The molybdenum content is particularly critical as it increases high-temperature tensile strength and creep resistance, while chromium enhances corrosion and oxidation resistance.
Another vital consideration is resistance to high-temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA) . In refinery hydroprocessing and reforming services, heat exchangers are exposed to hydrogen at elevated temperatures. SA387 Grade 11 (1¼Cr-½Mo) provides sufficient resistance to hydrogen attack for moderate hydrogen partial pressures, as defined by the API 941 Nelson curves. For moderate sour service environments with H₂S concentrations up to 10,000 ppm, the material also meets NACE MR0175 standards.
Finally, SA387 Grade 11 offers an optimal balance of performance and cost-effectiveness. While higher-grade alloys like SA387 Grade 22 provide greater hydrogen resistance and creep strength, Grade 11 is sufficient for temperatures up to approximately 593°C (1,100°F) and moderate hydrogen service. This makes it the ideal, cost-efficient choice for general tube-shell heat exchangers, distillation units, reboilers, and hydrotreating equipment where extreme conditions do not justify the additional expense of higher-alloy materials.
