When Should You Use A242 Type 1 Instead of ASTM A588? steel plate

ASTM A242 Type 1 and ASTM A588 are both widely used weathering steels, but their distinct characteristics make each suitable for different applications. A242 Type 1—historically known as USS COR-TEN A—offers superior corrosion resistance, particularly in industrial atmospheres where it exhibits 10–13% less corrosion than ASTM A588. Long-term atmospheric corrosion studies confirm that A242 Type 1 is the most corrosion-resistant among common weathering steel grades.

However, this enhanced corrosion protection comes with a trade-off in thickness availability. A242 Type 1 is typically limited to plates up to 0.75 inches (19 mm) thick, with a yield strength of 50 ksi (340 MPa). In contrast, ASTM A588 maintains its 50 ksi minimum yield strength for plates up to 4 inches (100 mm) thick, making it suitable for heavier structural sections.

Therefore, the choice between these two grades should be guided by specific project requirements. A242 Type 1 should be selected when: (1) the structure is located in an industrial environment with elevated corrosive pollutants; (2) maximum corrosion resistance is the primary design criterion; and (3) plate thicknesses remain within the 19 mm limitation. Common applications include housing structures, freight cars, and architectural elements where aesthetics and durability are paramount.

ASTM A588 is the better choice when: (1) thicker plates or heavy rolled shapes are required; (2) the structure will be exposed to rural or marine environments where corrosion resistance differences are minimal; and (3) the cost-benefit of slightly lower corrosion resistance is outweighed by greater design flexibility and material availability. Both steels form similar protective rust layers and are adequate for unpainted use in C2-C3 ISO corrosivity atmospheres, but A242 Type 1's superior corrosion resistance makes it the premium choice for demanding industrial exposures where thickness permits.
