When to Use NM600 Instead of NM500 in Crusher Applications steel plate

The choice between NM500 and NM600 in crushers hinges on the severity of abrasive wear versus the need for structural integrity. NM600, with a nominal Brinell hardness of approximately 600 HBW, should be selected when the wear mechanism is predominantly high-stress abrasion or gouging that rapidly consumes standard 500 HBW liners. This is typical in primary crushing of highly abrasive, hard rock (e.g., granite, basalt) where the wear rate on jaw plates or cone mantles is the primary bottleneck.

However, NM600 is not a universal upgrade. Its higher hardness generally corresponds to lower toughness and weldability compared to NM500. Therefore, NM600 is not recommended for crusher components that must absorb significant impact energy without cracking, such as the main frame or areas prone to tramp metal ingress. In those impact-dominated zones, NM500 or even tougher grades like NM450 offer a better balance of wear resistance and crack resistance. The decision should be based on the specific wear profile: use NM600 for chute liners and fine crushing surfaces where abrasion dominates, but retain NM500 for structural or high-impact components.
