In European projects, S420J0 is supplied under the EN 10025 standard, typically in normalized (N) or thermomechanically rolled (M) condition, depending on plate thickness and project specification. The "J0" designation mandates a minimum Charpy impact energy of 27 J at 0°C, making it suitable for structures subjected to dynamic loading in moderate climates.
Delivery must be accompanied by an inspection certificate 3.1 according to EN 10204, confirming compliance with chemical composition and mechanical properties. For welded structures, the carbon equivalent value (CEV) is commonly capped at 0.43 or lower to ensure weldability. Supplementary requirements frequently specified in European contracts include ultrasonic testing to EN 10160 and through-thickness testing (Z35) for critical connections. It is important to note that while S420J0 offers higher yield strength than S355 grades, the J0 impact grade limits its application in very cold environments; projects in colder regions typically upgrade to J2 or K2 grades for enhanced toughness.
