American standard steel structure classification steel plate

To serve a wide range of industries and applications, structural steel has evolved to require many different products to create optimal results. Agencies such as ASTM, ANSI, AISC, ASW, and others have developed uniform standards to ensure accuracy and compliance for a variety of projects. From hollow tubes to large I-beams, every component must meet these quality standards.

Steel plate is one such component that can be manufactured for a variety of purposes. Some of the more common styles include:

A36:Specified by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), this sheet is one of the most commonly used components today. A36 steel plate is hot rolled and very suitable for welding.

A572-50:Known for its higher strength and yield strength, this series of steel plates has a wide range of advantages in large-scale applications such as bridges, buildings, etc. A36 plate can withstand supports up to 36 ksi (kilo pounds per square inch), and A572-50 steel plate is designed for strength in excess of 50 ksi, providing higher strength at a lower weight.

1020:Steel plates in this AISI classification have high strength, weldability, workability and ductility. This product is easy to use, but its low carbon content will resist flame and induction hardening. 1020 steel is suitable for a variety of general purpose parts that are not structural.

1045:AISI 1045 steel plate is of medium hardness and can be additionally upgraded to meet construction needs. 1045 metal has good strength and resistance and is often used in machinery. However, measures need to be taken to prevent stress cracks caused by factors such as flame cutting.

A514-T1:A514-T1 steel plate has a tensile strength of 100,000 psi and can withstand heavier design loads. Structural steel manufacturers typically use this ASTM steel for heavy equipment rather than sheet, providing better results at lower weights.

A516:Pressure vessels requiring notched durability for best results can benefit from grade 55, 60, 65 or 70 steel plate. This steel sheet is ideal for the oil and gas industry, as well as a variety of other areas where pressure-dependent boilers and equipment are required. The A516 is simple to manufacture, robust and highly solderable.
